Since becoming the official Ironman bike at the beginning of 2009, Ceepo is quickly becoming a major presence on the Ironman circuit. That should come as no surprise when you realize that the man behind the Ceepo line, Joe Tanaka, is an avid Ironman competitor himself. Under Tanaka’s determined drive, in just a few years the Japanese company has steadily grown.

Tanaka, a regular competitor at Ironman Japan and a Kona finisher, is passionate about Ironman racing, but he’s probably more passionate about the quality of the bikes he’s producing. Made with the highest grade carbon fibre available on the market, each frame is tested extensively in the wind-tunnel to ensure it meets the company’s aerodynamic standards. Ceepo is focussed exclusively on triathlon frames so far, a trend that isn’t likely to change any time soon.

All the engineering in the world hardly matters, though, unless the bike rides up to all those exacting standards and tests. Last winter we put a Ceepo Venom through it’s paces and can quite comfortably report that Tanaka has done exactly what he set out to do – produce a bike that is very close to the ultimate in triathlon racing machines. In fact, he’s done such a good job of staying focussed on triathlon that to meet his aerodynamic goals, he had to eschew the UCI standards, so while the Venom is legal for triathlon racing, you won’t see it at the Tour or any other international bike races. (Things only get faster with the Ceepo Viper, which has been dubbed “the bike Batman would ride,” which is even more aerodynamic and is even further from the UCI standards.)

Using 40T high modulus carbon and a full carbon fork, the Venom is extremely light, but still manages to provide outstanding performance and comfort thanks to the hand-laid carbon fibre lay-up used in the frame construction. The bike absorbs road shock extremely well, which provides for an extremely smooth ride. To test the bike’s lateral stiffness, the best measure of performance, we hammered this bike up as many climbs as we could find, often using the big chain ring, and weren’t able to generate any flex in the bottom bracket. Suffice it to say that not only will you feel extremely comfortable on this bike, you can rest assured that all of your energy will go into moving you forward.

As mentioned earlier, the aerodynamic qualities of the Ceepo Venom are impressive. Like Cervelo’s P3 and P4, there’s a very deep cut out in the seat tube to improve aerodynamic airflow around the rear wheel. The seat tube is just 26 mm wide, cables are all internally routed and there’s even an aero-shaped head tube to cheat the wind as it hits the frame.

The aerodynamics of the bike are meaningless, of course, unless the rider position can match all the wind-cheating characteristics of the design. Once again Tanaka and his Ceepo design team have done a great job. Using a 77 degree seat tube angle, the Ceepo Venom is extremely comfortable to ride, especially in the aero position.

We’re not the only ones who found the Venom to be a speed demon on the roads. Since she started to ride the Ceepo Venom, Gina Ferguson has claimed a top-10 finish in her Kona debut and followed that up with Ironman wins in Western Australia and New Zealand, along with another win over the Ironman distance Wanaka Challenge.

If you’re looking for the ultimate in aerodynamics, performance and comfort you certainly won’t be disappointed with the Ceepo Venom.

They say that when you come across a Black Mamba in the wild you have two options: to die now or to run and die later. Either way you’re not getting out of there alive. It is the single most feared predator on the African Savannah. The Black Mamba attacks with ferocity, it is unforgiving. In the wild only the strongest survive; but against the Black Mamba even they don’t stand a chance.

The CEEPO MAMBA is the road bike for triathletes.

I can hear you thinking “who are CEEPO?” and “why should I trust them?”
The official bike partner of Ironman Triathlon; CEEPO are a Japanese company who specialise in triathlon specific frames. The MAMBA was the result of demand from their ITU athletes to provide a light, aerodynamic frame that was ITU compliant.

A road bike made for triathletes; the CEEPO MAMBA incorporates UCI compliant, ITU triathlon specific design. Whilst the average age group triathlete will not need the ITU compliant geometry, they will benefit from the comfort and aerodynamics that the frame provides.

RIDE
I was given the CEEPO MAMBA for two weeks. Each year I ride my TT bike during the summer season and then pack it away for winter as I log some base km’s in the wet, cold and rain. Apart from not wanting to wreck my TT bike; I want to keep it race friendly for as long as possible. When talking to mates, I found that most triathletes were in this position.

The CEEPO Mamba rides like the child of a top end road bike and a TT frame. The first thing I did was to fit some short clip-on aerobars to the frame. If CEEPO was right I should have been just as comfortable, powerful and efficient in both the ‘road’ (handle bars) position as I was when I switched it into ‘triathlon’ (aerobars) mode. They were right. It has completely changed the way I look at my winter training. Now I can incorporate good climbing and longer intervals into the same workout; whereas previously I would have chosen a frame (road or TT) to suit my specific goal.

It has meant that come summer I will have (hopefully) held onto some of my flexibility and be closer to triathlon specific bike fitness. That can only be a good thing.

SIMPLE
So let’s keep it simple. What makes the CEEPO MAMBA stand out from the crowd?

Made from 100% High Modulus Carbon and weighing in at only 1000 grams; the CEEPO MAMBA frame is super light, super tough and very responsive.

During winter, athletes want to give their TT bikes a rest. When summer comes around they have lost the flexibility that comes with being down in their aero-position. The CEEPO MAMBA gives triathletes the ability to keep a similar position on their road bike.

In a world where road bikes are made for pure cyclists; the CEEPO MAMBA was designed for triathlon. This means that you can attach clip-on aerobars and achieve a comfortable and efficient fit for training during winter.

The MAMBA is the perfect bike for those who want to invest in a new bike, but can’t decide between a road or TT frame style. It is fast enough to complement the strongest riders whilst also allowing those new to the sport room to ‘grow into their bike’ as their strength and skills improve.

CEEPO has harnessed the collective power of both the high end road and TT frames with the MAMBA. It will change the way you think about winter training. The CEEPO MAMBA is fast becoming the most feared predator in triathlon.

In the wild only the strongest survive. Make sure it’s you.

The Saucony Grid Type A2 are great!

4 runs later and my feet have found running heaven. I have never had a shoe fit so perfectly nor deliver such a sublime balance between support, cushioning, ventilation and weightlessness.

Here are 5 reviews for you to read. (No, I didn’t put only the best reviews in. I took the first 5 I found.)

1. “If you’re anything like me, you don’t understand why running shoe manufactures continue to produce ugly, clunky looking shoes. Many look as though they were designed in a room with the lights turned off. Even today most running shoes are hardly fashionable, unless you consider appearing like you have a lump of rubber and foam tied to your kickers; sexy. I for one do not. So I’m happy to see more shoe makers finally coming out with more aesthetically pleasing models as they realize they can amp sales and tap into crossover markets simply by adding some oomph to the design process.”

“The Saucony Grid Type A2 is the ultimate marriage of utility and good looks.”

“With its sleek appearance and sexy lines, you’ll easily forget that although this shoe is head turner, it also trounces the competition in shear performance. Keeping with my routine of buying last year’s model and saving coin, I snagged a pair of these beauties last month and I have been nothing but happy with them since.”

“The first thing I noticed when I took these lovelies out of the box was their weight- all 5.9 oz of them! That’s right; these puppies are as light as a feather, or at least, as light as a 5.9 oz feather.”

“After slipping these on for a frolic, the difference between these and my Brooks and Asics trainers is incredible. Granted though, that the Saucony Grid Type A2s are racing flats, and my trainers are not. But even compared to my Zoot flats (click here for my review), Saucony easily takes the cake for comfort and design.”

“The Grid Type A2 features lightweight, highly breathable mesh uppers that make it seemingly impossible for soggy or sweaty feet to spoil your run, and the integrated tongue and heel finger tugs make slipping these on in transition a complete breeze.

Running barefoot in these are very doable as they offer few friction points and a permeated sole for better underfoot breathability than nearly any shoe on the market. The tongue isn’t integrated like the Zoot ULTRA, but with a lace stay to help hold it in place you hardly notice.”

“The toe box is roomy and the arch support is minimal like any high quality performance neutral shoe. This shoe seems to cater to mid-to-high, stable arches, so if you have particularly wide feet you might feel a bit unstable with the narrow mid sole and heel width of this shoe. Also, these run very small, so buy at least one full size large.”

“The shoe also features Saucony’s XT 900 carbon rubber outsole technology, which makes for noticeably superior road feel and increased durability. Unlike most racing flats that feel like they are slowly disintegrating under your feet as you run, these feel strikingly brawny and robust, but with a light, springy rebound not usually found with a flat.”

“If you’re particularly experienced with minimalistic running, you could easily sport these gems to tackle a full marathon, and look uber sexy doing it. For you triathletes, checking out this shoe is a must if you’re in the market for a flat.”

2. “I have never had racing flats before and I love how light they are but still have some cushioning. I ran with them in a 5k and am planning to wear them in a half marathon on 2 weeks. Love the color as well. Definitely fit true to size, overall I would recommend to others and I have always been an Asics fan, this is the first pair of Saucony’s I have owned and will def look into more in the future.”

 3. “I am a triathlete and love that it is so easy to get into the shoes quickly with the heel and tongue grips. I have only raced in these shoes for 4 races and every time the shoe picks up small stones in the vents of the soul and I get a bruised heel that keeps me from running for a few days after a race. This is the only flaw I found with these shoes.” (This guy is clearly too heavy for shoes of this type)

4. “These shoes provide a lot of support for such a light shoe. That is important to me since I tend to end up with knee pain when I run in a shoe without support. The Type A2s are also well built and will last a good long time. I recently used these in a 10K with no problem and am going to use them in a half marathon next month.”

5. “Saucony” is an American Indian word meaning, “mouth of a creek or river.” The brand’s “river” mark represents the flow of the Saucony Creek in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, where the company built its first factory in 1906.

“Founded in 1898, the Saucony brand today is most popular with marathoners and triathletes. It may be best known for its Originals line, built around the Jazz running shoe in the 1980s and arguably the most technical running shoe of its time.”

“I’ve tried a lot of running shoes over the last 32 years but I have never owned a pair of racing flats, so I tried the Saucony Grid Type A2.”

“Racing flats are designed to help you run more efficiently. The absence of a robust heel translates into a lighter shoe with less support and cushioning but better foot to ground power transfer. I have a normal foot strike, which helps with flats. The heel to toe transition is smooth and responsive. The wide open mesh upper hugged my feet and kept them cool. At a feather light 6.9 ounces, both shoes together weigh less than just one of my trail shoes.”

“If you’re going to run in racing flats, you may as well look fast on the starting line. I wore them for the first time on the back end of a brick workout after a 25-ml. tempo ride. I was running on tired legs, especially after an 80-ml. ride the day before, and I wanted a good run. I may not be crazy fast, but I sure look fast and feel about ten years younger in these shoes. And there’s a lot to be said for that. A singlet or tri top and tri shorts or a tri suit with these shoes looks great. The marathon shirt from your last race with running shorts–not so much.”

“My biggest concern was the low profile, which doesn’t really accommodate an orthotic. I tried the SOLE footbed but even that was too much of an insert for these racing shoes. So I ran with the removable, perforated, cushioned sockliner that comes with the shoes. It felt like I was almost running barefoot. The super lightweight flats definitely put you in touch with the road. I swear my leg turnover was just a bit faster in these shoes even though a 90 – 95 rpm ride also increases the leg turnover on the run.”

“It’s also important to me that my tri shoes work well with lock laces. I find some shoes just have a eyelet pattern that isn’t comfortable with lock laces. The Saucony worked perfectly. I was able to use all the eyelets with my lock laces and it allowed an easy and snug fit.”

“Racing flats have about half the lifespan of normal shoes. I’ll wear them for the 5-mile run portion of the Morgan Hill Sprint Triathlon at Uvas next month. I’ll probably use these flats for 5K and 10K runs and Olympic distance tris this year. I think I prefer the comfort of my Asics Landreth for anything longer than a 10K. Did I mention how good I look in these racing flats?”

“I can’t finish a run without getting a comment about these shoes. The bright cobalt blue siding, grey and white mesh uppers, and silver shoelaces make these shoes fashionable on the starting line and in the Starbucks line.”

“Make sure to lift up your foot so the annoying person behind you tapping their foot while you order your coffee can clearly read the “kiss this” printed on the soles. Once you slip these on you’ll know why they are popular with pros like the U.S.’ Linsey Corbin and Australian Kate Major.”

“While looking sharp is half the battle, it turns out the slick-look of these shoes belies a highly functional racing flat. The bright blue sides of these shoes are highly reflective for those dawn and late-dusk runs. The tongue and heel have pull-loops for quick entry and adjustment, a nice feature to have in the transition area. The mesh uppers are highly breathable, and the shoe weighs in at less than 6 ounces, making it ideal an ideal hot weather racing flat. Because of the lightweight nature of this shoe, it’s meant for neutral runners who don’t need elaborate cushioning or stabilization features.”

The Type A2 is last season’s model. The new model, the Type A 3 look just like this:

And there you have it. I really enjoy these shoes and feel so comfortable in them. They are flexible and make running that much more enjoyable for me.

Intro

During physical activity our neuromuscular pathways play a major role in alignment, movement, postural support and also responsiveness or “muscular awareness”.

Certain patterns are impressed on the motor coordination centre as a result of stimuli, be it physical trauma and injury, emotional trauma, or new and desirable learning through training or simply as part of natural progression as we favourably adapt to our environments.

Post injury, dysfunctional movement patterns impressed on the neuromuscular pathways during the time of injury results in definite dysfunction and pain. This is known as sub-clinical injury and although there is no longer any physical tissue damage, pain and inefficiencies still exist. These ergonomically inefficient use patterns inherently affect our energy levels and general state of well-being.

The unexpected benefits of Muscle Activation extend beyond the improvement of neuromuscular efficiency. By reducing the energy demand for the support and movement system, muscular definition is increased through the attainment of normal activity levels, tissue metabolism is normalized, and the availability of freed-up energy boosts brain function.

How it Works

Muscle Activation engages kinaesthetic conversation with the motor control centre. It bypasses the usual reflex spinal root circuits thereby over-riding the current natural reflex state of that specific pathway and facilitates new learning.

Initially testing is done by asking the muscle to resist an application of pressure. This reveals the responsiveness (muscular awareness) of the specific neuromuscular connection and a rating out of ten is given.

The antagonistic muscle (opposing muscle) is then tested in the same way. Imbalances in the *cooperative muscle group are thereby detected and are rectified by stimulating the neuromuscular pathway along specific pressure points.

This reawakens the malfunctioning neuromuscular pathway and immediately improves muscular awareness.

The same tests are then repeated and the results are astonishing.

Conclusion

Muscle Activation significantly improved my muscular awareness, quickening my response time to the applied pressure during post therapy testing.

Greater strength and greater flexibility is something that any athlete can put to good use. Muscle Activation really is that dam good.

Footnotes:

*Cooperative Muscle Groups consist of the following sets of muscles:

Agonists – They create the normal range of movement in a joint by contracting. They are primarily responsible for generating the movement.

Antagonists – These muscles act in opposition to the movement generated by the agonists and are responsible for returning a limb to its initial position.

Synergists – These muscles perform, or assist in performing, the same set of joint motion as the agonists. They neutralize extra motion from the agonists to make sure that the force generated works within the desired plane of motion.

Fixators – These muscles provide the necessary support to assist in holding the rest of the body in place while the movement occurs.

Getting a new pair of running shoes is always fun, especially when they look like the New Balance RC 760.

Almost like a tennis ball - Just add fluff

For the lay man selecting a running shoe can be easy, if it looks good and falls into the right price category it’s a done deal. But now, more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of having the correct shoe.

Before the NB RC760, I was running in the Asics Gel DS Racer 7. They both fall into the supportive racer category however as little as supportive racers could vary, they are quite different. Allow me to start with the Asics.

The Asics have a large pronation block and no mid-foot support piece allowing the shoe more lateral flexibility whilst correcting pronation through the large pronation block. They are considerably soft for a racer allowing for a smoother ride and hence a smooth transition through the gait. This shoe is certainly better suited to a heel striking runner with a high toe off, offering more cushioning than most racers yet still have a low profile and are still extremely light at 195 grams.

The New Balance on the other hand has a significantly smaller pronation block, yet has an extensive amount of mid foot support which extends up along the inside of the heel. This makes the New Balance extremely supportive and considerably more rigid than most other racers. The NB is better suited to a mid- foot striker with a flatter gait as there is little lateral flexibility thanks to the extensive amount of mid-foot support. Also if you do happen to run on gravel or similar off-road terrain the New Balance is a great shoe for this purpose.

Overall the Asics offer more cushioning and flexibility whereas the New Balance offer more support.

At this stage I still cannot choose and rightly so. I had a pair of very nice elastic laces in my Asics and am yet to put a pair in my New Balance. It just wouldn’t be fair to choose right now.

(Repeatedly shaking heads from side to side) “No”, you say? I couldn’t agree more. If you’ve all been good children for Santa then you should have finished all your work already.

Well Christmas came a little early for me. As of last week I am now racing for Team Audi. Associate sponsors are New Balance, MSM: Multisport Magazine, Wasp, and Med Sport.

Team Audi is made up of a diverse group of locally talented athletes who train like professionals, yet race as amateurs whilst holding down full time

employment and or studies.

Wane Rossouw who spearheaded the creation of Team Audi says: “Our objective is to popularize the sport of triathlon and duathlon and to be the best brand ambassadors to our partners by encouraging others to participate in the sport.”

Team Audi is a strong team and has seen some impressive results thus far.

“Gilbert Lucas catapulted the team’s reputation as he proved to be an almost unstoppable force in the run-bike-run format of duathlon in which he excels. He won every duathlon in Cape Town, he earned himself a place on the South African team and competed at the World Duathlon Championships this year, finishing 14th and 1st South African home.”

Thus far this season there have been some impressive results including several category wins including my own. So far so good.

Here’s to some hard and fast racing. Thanks Team Audi.

"Life is sacred. Celebrate life.
Care for others and share whatever you have with those less fortunate than you.
Broaden your vision, for the whole world belongs to you." Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Let me start off by explaining what The Art of Living is. (The Art of Living does however kindly ask that we do not repeat or teach any of the techniques or methods used, and I intend on fulfilling their request.)

Developed by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the Art of Living involves using various techniques to quiet the mind in order to achieve a greater understanding of one’s existence, giving you the ability to experience a stress-free and joyful life.

“The Art of Living Foundation is a non-profit, educational and charitable organisation that operates in more than 140 countries and is dedicated to serving society by strengthening the individual.

Our self-development programmes offer techniques that eliminate stress, calm the mind, improve health, expand awareness, resolve conflict and encourage people from all backgrounds, religions and cultures to come together in celebration and service.

As the largest volunteer based NGO in the world with a wide range of social, cultural and spiritual activities, the Foundation has reached out to over 20 million people from all walks of life.”

The Art of Living is not religion based. Sri Sri Ravi Shanka has spoken and presented his enlightened knowledge in a variety of holy temples and has presented The Art of Living to Christians, Jews, Islams and many other relions; where he was welcomed and applauded by all.

There is no real reason why you should not experience this for yourself and I would encourage you to attend the Art of Living: Part 1 course. It is however vital that you attend with an open mind as the knowledge you acquire is unique and the benefits cannot be fully experienced by a doubting mind.

I had an amazing experience this weekend at the Art of Living: Part 1 course. The idea of the Art of Living is to quiet the mind to such a state that thoughts are nonexistent, allowing us to become aware of our body and just exist in our most natural form.

It was interesting for me to experience the dynamics of the group attending the course. Some people appeared to be completely serious and had a stern look most of the time, which made little sense to me as part of what The Art of Living is meant to develop is a more child like state; one of happiness and intrigue. These people seemed more like business people attending a conference. Others though were having an absolute blast. They were the ones who took a liking to me and also happened to thank me for my honesty in the questions that I posed.

All in all the Art of Living is almost a must do for everyone. The stress of modern day life has such an extremely negative impact on our lives and most of us can use a little upliftment. Can you imagine being able to just forgive and forget? Can you imagine how nice it would be to be able to just let things go? What would it be like to live a life of acceptance?

The Art of Living can give you all of this. If you’d like to know more please visit www.artofliving.org.za or email gerlinde@artofliving.org.za. The next Art of Living Part 1 course will take place 8-13 December. When you do decide that you would like to attend this course please email me – nic@once-events.co.za. I’d just like know who you are.

I would like to thank Mukesh and Gerlinde for sharing the Art of Living with us and bettering people’s lives through the insight of Sri Sri Ravi Shanka.

I sent an email to Rob at 09:49am requesting suncream for Reach for a Dream. At 10:52 Rob replied with “I am happy to supply you…” Now that is service.

Simply by buying Island Tribe you will be indirectly making a sun safe environment in which kids with cancer can enjoy the little time they have. You will helping them reach their dreams.

I know which suncream I will be using this season.
